Jim Southwick took up the role of Managing Director for the Minnesota MedTech 3.0 coalition in February 2025, after retiring from a career at Medtronic and in the U.S. Government. The Minnesota MedTech 3.0 coalition was initiated by the Medtronic CEO along with the CEOs of the Mayo Clinic and HealthPartners and includes the University of Minnesota and other academic partners, other leading healthcare systems in Minnesota, Medical Alley, representatives from the venture finance industry, and other partners. Governor Walz' administration is closely involved. The goal of the coalition is to further strengthen the medical technology ecosystem in Minnesota, recognizing that while we are a leader in this field the national and global competition is moving aggressively, and we cannot rest on our laurels. At the same time, this sector presents tremendous opportunities for new innovations, including the convergence of Big Tech and AI with medical technology. Minnesota can capture tremendous growth in research, manufacturing, and high-wage jobs through a more strategic focus on this sector. Jim will describe the strategy of the coalition to advance these opportunities.
